GS1's Sunrise 2027 is the industry's milestone, not ours, and it changes who generates events: after it, the same carton is scannable by a shopper, a returns clerk or a partner's agent, most of them not the retailer's own equipment. An event stream that only accepts events from equipment you own will describe a shrinking share of what actually happened to your product.
That is the practical reason capture is free and the schema is the standard's. The record follows the item from the source through the shelf and past the lane, at the serial, so a return or an authenticity question is answered against a real path.
