The file is open now, or it will be inside eighteen months. An artwork change goes through design review, brand validation, regulatory, legal, market adaptation and final sign-off — several rounds at most of those stages, and weeks of calendar when nothing goes wrong. Every stage has a different owner and not one of them is scheduled around a barcode. So what the symbol carries gets decided once, inside that window, by whoever is in the room — and then it does not come up again for something close to a decade, because a request to open the artwork outside a cycle is a capital request with nothing attached to it.

Those requests do not get approved, and they should not get approved. A manager who approved them routinely would be a bad manager. The discipline is correct. What the discipline produces is a decision window that opens roughly once a decade, and the next one is already on somebody’s calendar in your company.

What it costs you.

That is not a defect in anyone’s point of sale. A register was built to answer one question — what is this and what does it cost — and the GTIN answers it completely. Every other field in the symbol is surplus to that question, so it goes nowhere, several thousand times a day, in every store.

Which means the item-level signal you paid for at the artwork change is generated and destroyed in the same scan. The one system in the building that reads your barcode keeps the digits that say what kind of thing it is and drops the ones that would have told you which one, where, and when.

Two of the three are already true. Check both.

Three application identifiers, one symbol, one scan. The register needs the first one and has nowhere to put the other two. The third thing that has to be true is the split itself — and that is the one part of this that is not built, listed as unbuilt on What ships today. It is the only part of this you are being asked to take on trust.

What changes.

Fork it. The GTIN will go to the point of sale exactly as it does today; the serial, the lot and the expiry will go to your own record instead of to the floor. The split itself is not built; it rides the capture spine, which answers at api.epcis.dev to a capture key today. The ask was never to add a step — no change to how anyone works, no new hardware on the counter.

Sunrise 2027 is GS1’s program, not ours, and it is the timing rather than the argument. By the end of December 2027 retail point of sale is expected to scan and process 2D barcodes as well as linear ones. That is a published date on somebody else’s plan, which is exactly what makes it useful: it is when the symbol on your pack is next opened, and what it carries is decided once and then not again for a decade.

What this is not. Nothing here puts a symbol on anyone’s pack — that is your artwork file and your decision as the brand that owns the GTIN. Whether shoppers scan a pack at any volume is a bet, and it is one we are asking you to shoot down rather than a number we can cite; nothing on this page depends on a consumer ever scanning anything. GS1 has not reviewed, certified or approved this platform.

6 things a reader who knows this field would stop and correct. Several of them cost us the thing this category is usually sold on, which is why they are on the page and not in a footnote.

    A GS1 DataMatrix is not a QR code for a shopper’s phone. It is a lane symbol, read by lane hardware. The consumer story is a different symbol and a different decision, and anyone who blurs the two is selling you both at the price of one.

    Element strings are not a URI. (01)…(10)… and a Digital Link URI are two different encodings of overlapping content, and the lane parses the first. Which one goes on the pack is genuinely your decision as the GTIN owner.

    Sunrise’s baseline is GTIN extraction at point of sale. Lot and expiry are optional application identifiers a brand chooses to encode. Nothing in the program obliges you to carry either.

    Sunrise puts nothing on anyone’s pack. It sets what a register is expected to be able to read. What gets printed is the brand’s decision, on the brand’s cycle, and it always was.

    hasGS1DigitalLink is on pending.schema.org, not in schema.org core — verified 2026-08-06, where the term’s own page marks it Pending. It is not new in v30.0, and a proposal is not a standard.

Fork the scan.

The retail lane will read the whole symbol and keep a twelfth of it. The other eleven twelfths are yours for the asking, and asking costs nobody a behavior change.

From the end of December 2027, under GS1’s Sunrise program, retail point of sale is expected to scan and process 2D barcodes as well as the linear ones. A 2D symbol on a consumer pack can carry the GTIN, the serial, the batch or lot, and the expiry date, in one scan, at the same counter, on the same hardware. The register needs the GTIN. It has no field for the rest and no reason to keep it.

So the fork is the whole idea, and it is deliberately unambitious: the GTIN goes where it already goes, and the serial, the lot and the expiry go to your record instead of to the floor. Nobody scans differently. Nothing new is bought for the lane. The date is already on somebody’s plan in your company, because the artwork has to change anyway.
